Strategies for Capacity Preservation

The 2000 PDX Master Plan does not assume that facility growth at the airport is the only solution to solving our region´s air transportation needs. It seeks to delay further expansion through exploring capacity preservation strategies. Some of these strategies include:

  • Meeting with other Pacific Northwest airports to discuss coordinating operations;
  • Working with the states of Oregon and Washington to promote passenger rail improvements along the Interstate 5 corridor;
  • Exploring other demand management strategies, including congestion pricing, and working within the aviation industry to promote these ideas;
  • Developing and implementing technological improvements to allow more efficient use of the airport terminal, runways and airspace. Some of these improvements could include additional electronic ticket check-in kiosks, as well as satellite GPS systems to improve aircraft movements in the airport´s surrounding airspace and on the airfield.
